New York Times attacked and hacked by Syrian Electronic Army

The USA Today reported on August 27, 2013, that the NY Times was attacked by hackers and was inaccessible till early Wednesday morning.

The attack is believed to be made by pro-Syrian Government group. They hacked more than ten websites including Twitter, NY Times, and Huffington Post, etc.

At 3 p.m. ET Tuesday some people started notifying the technical issues they were facing while accessing the website.

Even the Times’ mobile version was inaccessible. The website crash was followed by an online assail on the Times’ domain name registrar, Melbourne IT.

The USA Today quoted the chief information officer for The New York Times Co. named Marc Frons, mentioning that the breakdown was “the result of a malicious external attack” and he thus notified employees to “be careful when sending e-mail communications until this situation is resolved”.

In addition Frons also stated the attack was performed by the Syrian Electronic Army “or someone trying very hard to be them.”

A team of hackers under SEA who support Syrian President Bashar Assad allegedly indulged in online crime of attacking several prominent websites lately.
